What it says on the back of the book

Does your child have a mental block about numbers?
Are you worried that you can't really 'do' maths?

Dyscalculia is similar to dyslexia but it affects how people deal with numbers, instead of words. It is often behind the common complaint "I was never any good at maths at school".

There are many reasons why the inability to 'do' maths affects so many children, and follows them into adulthood, and it has little to do with intelligence. The major reason is anxiety, and the best way to overcome that anxiety is to build on what they already know. Everyone knows more maths than they think, everyone has existing skills and knowledge (however small) that can be extended to many more skills ad knowledge of maths. "Dr Chinn explains carefully and clearly what can cause problems with learning maths... and goes back to the basics before tackling more difficult concepts such as fractions, decimals, ratios - all necessary in coping with everyday life!" Hornsby International Dyslexia Centre Dealing with Dyscalculia is for all those, of any age who have difficulty with maths and want to do better. It is for parents and teachers looking for a way to encourage and help their children. It is based on understanding why people have failed with maths previously and knowing how people can learn more efficiently. Mathematics has been traditionally taught as a series of facts, rather than as a set of principles to be understood, but Steve Chinn clearly explains the basic principles of mathematics, and how they can be used in various situations, to make numbers seem less threatening and , perhaps for the first time, they will begin to make sense. Numbers are integral to everyday life, from checking the cost of shopping and understanding a train timetable to calculating the best value mobile phone deal, and Steve Chinn brings maths into everyday life. Providing a solid foundation to understand maths Dealing with Dyscalculia will inspire the confidence to make learning maths easier. Steve Chinn's The Trouble With Maths was awarded the NASEN/TES Award.
