What it says on the back of the book

Sue Gardner lives in a village in North Essex and has taught both adults and children who are dyslexic. For 25 years she worked for the Local Education Authority as a Special Educational Needs Teacher and subsequently as a Coordinator. She spent some years researching the various teaching methods used to help dyslexic students. She currently works for the Thorpe Dyslexia Centre in North Essex. This book is the result of her research and experiences, giving the method she has devised, which has successfully helped students improve their literacy skills. Although this book has been designed for children, the same approach may be used for adults.

From the Preface This book is a teaching method devised for dyslexic children and slow learners in reading and spelling. It contains tried and tested approaches to solving many of the difficulties these children experience, and includes work sheets that can be used and developed. It is aimed at parents, teacher's assistants, and those teachers who have not trained in teaching dyslexic students. a dyslexic child does not learn in the conventional way. They take much longer to absorb the variety of rules that make up the English language. This book presents them in a fun, yet practical way. The book is divided into three volumes for easy reference. 'Part One : Basics' contains lessons usually learnt in the first year of Primary School, and is essentially for helping the student come to grips with some of English's peculiarities. 'Part Two : The Magic of Vowels' explores the five vowels and the many different ways they can be used and combined to make the rich variety of vowel sounds used in English. 'Part Three : Building the Vocabulary' leads the student to a more advanced level, with sections covering areas such as prefixes and endings, punctuation, patterns of spelling and basic grammar. Throughout the volumes are many worksheets along with passages to be used for reading practice. Even if your child has already progressed in reading and writing beyond the 'Basics' stage, it will still benefit both teacher and student to work through the three volumes from the beginning, as the teaching later in the book builds on what is learnt in the earlier sections. I have used the pronoun 'he' in this book to simplify reading, and because more boys than girls seem to inherit this gene. We think... Sue Gardner has produced an excellent series of three wire-bound books that take a motivated parent through all the steps needed to teach their child reading, spelling, punctuation and grammar. The pages are well laid out, easy to follow and have many practical teaching suggestions. A dyslexic adult who wants to go back to the basics can also follow the information in these books, as long as the adult can ignore the ‘dyslexic children’ references.
