"Before Toe by Toe, I was living in a deep dark hole. Everyone else understood things and I didn't. When I was given the book, I felt a rope ladder had been thrown down to me. It didn't have any rungs...I had to build them myself and that has taken time. Now I feel I'm near the top and I can see daylight. I feel sorry for anyone stuck at the bottom"

Detailed Description

The name Toe by Toe was chosen to signify that a student makes progress by the tiniest steps - one toe at a time. However, even though the steps taken are small, the student can clearly measure his or her progress right from the first page. The student's confidence and self-esteem are boosted as a result. Over 25 years of fieldwork went into the development of the system and it is this research which makes the method so easy to use. You don't have to be trained in any field of Education to tutor with Toe by Toe. In fact, the manual often works better with non-professionals using it as they do not come to the task with any pre-conceived notions and thus simply follow the very detailed instructions to the letter.

The unique syllable division employed by Toe by Toe is very easy to use though it is not the syllable division generally used for the teaching of reading. Once the sound of a phoneme has been taught using the 'polynons' (nonsense words), these rules can then be applied to any multi-syllabic word and students find a whole new world of reading opening before their eyes. No matter what the nature of the student's literacy problem, they can be taught to read using Toe by Toe. The severity of their problem may only be reflected in the length of time needed to get through the book. Indeed, if the system is used with a 'non-dyslexic' child (i.e. one without learning difficulties) the rapid improvement in reading age is truly astonishing.

The authors are constantly updating and refining their methods to meet the needs of people with specific learning difficulties (dyslexia). Toe by Toe has been tested on children of all ages and adults from all walks of life.

Toe by Toe recommendations:

"Your Toe by Toe reading program has changed the lives of my two students. They are excited to learn, more confident in their abilities, and proud of their achievements. It is an absolute pleasure to work with this program. I am floored with the results thus far and I'm excited to see the progress that I know will continue. Thank you for this gift!"
S.T. (Private tutor), Canada

"Just a big thank you...my life has changed since discovering the Toe by Toe program. My pupils enjoy it and discover for themselves where their weakness lies... I must also say that the little red book has created moments of magic for my pupils and from me!!"
Deidre Visser, Remedial Teacher, Sea Point, Cape Town, South Africa

"I have now used the scheme with many pupils of all ages and without exception all have been amazed, in a relatively short time, at their unexpected progress. Like the 21 year old who told me, about 1/3 way through the book, that he could now read the signposts when they went out for a drive!"
