What is Key Stage 1?

Key Stage 1 (KS1) covers the first two years of primary school in England and Wales (Year 1 and Year 2) for children roughly aged 5 to 7. It's the stage where phonics, early reading, handwriting and basic number skills are first properly established, and where a child's confidence with reading and writing (or an early struggle with it) often becomes noticeable.

The Key Stage 1 curriculum

The KS1 national curriculum focuses on core subjects, English, maths and science, alongside foundation subjects including history, geography, art, PE and computing. In English, children move from phonics and decoding towards fluent, confident reading and simple writing; in maths, they build number sense, addition and subtraction, and early problem-solving. For children with dyslexia or reading difficulties, this is a critical window: the right support at this stage can make a lasting difference to how a child engages with the rest of their schooling.
