Frequently asked questions
What is a smart pen?
A smart pen is a pen that writes on paper with ordinary ink while simultaneously capturing what you write as a digital file. A sensor near the nib reads a fine dot pattern printed on the page to track the pen's position, and sends that data by Bluetooth to an app on a phone, tablet or computer.
Do smart pens need special paper or notebooks?
Yes. Smart pens read a microscopic dot pattern printed onto the page, so they only capture writing made in compatible notebooks or pads. Ordinary paper produces no digital copy at all. Dot patterns are not interchangeable between manufacturers either, so refill notebooks must match the pen. Budget for the paper alongside the pen from the outset.
How do smart pens help with dyslexia and dysgraphia?
They solve the problem of notes that cannot be used afterwards. Someone with dysgraphia may take notes successfully and then find them illegible later. A digital copy can be enlarged, reformatted, searched or converted to text, and audio recorded alongside fills the gaps. For dyspraxia, it removes the need to rewrite work neatly, which is usually the most tiring part.
Do smart pens convert handwriting into typed text?
Most smart pen apps offer handwriting recognition, converting captured writing into editable text. Accuracy depends heavily on how legible and consistent the handwriting is, which is worth knowing if the user has dysgraphia, since that is precisely where recognition struggles. Treat conversion as a useful extra rather than the main reason to buy, and test it with the user's own handwriting.
What is the difference between a smart pen and a reader pen?
They do opposite jobs. A smart pen captures what you write and turns it into a digital file. A reader pen scans printed text and reads it aloud, helping someone access text they cannot decode. If the difficulty is writing and note-taking, you want a smart pen. If the difficulty is reading, you want a reader pen.
How do schools use smart pens for SEND pupils?
Schools typically issue them to pupils on SEN support or with an EHCP from Key Stage 3 upwards, where note-taking volume rises and handwriting legibility begins to affect attainment. They are often preferred to a scribe or a laptop because they are far less conspicuous, letting a pupil work the same way as their peers while still producing a usable record.
Can I get a smart pen through Access to Work?
Access to Work is a government scheme that can fund equipment and support for disabled people in employment, including assistive technology for dyslexia, dysgraphia and dyspraxia. Applications are made by the employee rather than by the supplier. If an assessor has recommended a smart pen, contact us and we can provide a written quote covering the pen and its notebooks.
