What are Gaming Controller Grips?

Gaming Controller Grips are clip-on accessories, known as Thumb Soldier grips, that attach to a games controller's joysticks to make gaming easier for children with dyspraxia, cerebral palsy, or other motor control and fine motor difficulties. They clip on without tools and do not mark the controller when removed.

How they help

Many children with dyspraxia or other motor control difficulties find standard joysticks small, slippery or hard to hold steady during fast-paced gameplay. These grips enlarge and stabilise the joystick contact point, reducing slippage and making precise movements easier to achieve. Because the knuckle kit clips on and off in seconds, parents can swap between grip styles to suit different games or different hands without any permanent changes to the controller itself.

  • Gives children with dyspraxia, cerebral palsy or reduced fine motor control a steadier, more secure joystick grip, so gaming feels less of a fight against the controller.
  • Tool-free clip-on fitting means parents can attach or remove the grips themselves in moments, without needing to take the controller apart.
  • Several grip styles are available, including larger surface grips for palm, fingertip or elbow control, loop-style grips for extra thumb security, and extended stick grips for children with very limited hand strength.
  • Works across PS4, PS5, Xbox One/X/S/Elite, Nintendo Switch, Steam Deck and several other popular controllers, so most families will find a compatible option.

Designed for reduced hand function

These grips were designed by The Active Hands Company, a specialist in gripping aids for people with reduced hand function, including dyspraxia, cerebral palsy and other conditions that affect motor control and coordination. One parent has described how the grips let a family member play again independently from his wheelchair, illustrating the kind of everyday independence these grips are designed to support.

If gaming has become a source of frustration rather than fun for your child, Gaming Controller Grips offer a simple, tool-free way to make their existing controller easier and more comfortable to use.
