How AI Can Support Dyslexia In The Workplace

For many adults with dyslexia, one of the biggest workplace challenges is being able to get their ideas from their head onto the page. Whether it is writing emails, reports, proposals, meeting notes or presentations, turning thoughts into structured written content can take significantly more time and mental energy.

That is why many dyslexic professionals are beginning to explore Artificial Intelligence (AI) as part of their daily toolkit. It’s something that we here at The Dyslexia Shop know firsthand, with several of our team using AI regularly to support our day-to-day activities.

In this latest article, we thought we would explore how AI is helping in the workplace and how you can embrace this new technology…

Helping ideas flow

One of the most valuable uses of AI is helping to organise thoughts. Many dyslexic adults are highly creative thinkers who can see connections, patterns and solutions quickly, but translating those ideas into a clear written structure can sometimes feel like the hardest part of the process.

AI tools can help create a starting point. You might begin with a few rough notes, a voice recording, or even a collection of disconnected thoughts, which you can then help to organise into a draft, allowing you to focus on refining and improving the content rather than staring at a blank page.

Reducing the mental load

Writing often involves much more than simply putting words on a page, requiring spelling, grammar, sentence structure, proofreading and formatting. For dyslexic professionals, these additional demands can increase cognitive load and make routine workplace tasks more exhausting than they need to be.

AI can assist by identifying errors, suggesting clearer wording and helping to improve readability. This does not mean the work is finished automatically, and human review remains essential, but having support with the first draft can free up your valuable time and mental energy.

A useful partner for communication

Workplaces today rely heavily on written communication, whether it be emails, project updates, meeting summaries or collaborative documents; they all require clear written language. AI can be particularly useful when drafting professional communications, helping users check tone, improve clarity and ensure key information is included.

For dyslexic employees who may spend extra time reviewing written work, this can help improve confidence and efficiency. It’s important that AI is viewed as a support tool rather than an authority, though, as it can make mistakes, misunderstand context and occasionally generate information that is inaccurate. Everything it produces should be reviewed and edited before being shared. The expertise, judgement and decision-making still come from the individual.

Not a replacement for skills

There is sometimes concern that AI will replace learning, writing or critical thinking, but in reality, the most effective use of AI is as an assistant. It does not replace workplace skills, professional knowledge or experience; it simply provides another way of accessing and expressing them.

Think of it in the same way as spellcheck, text-to-speech software or reading pens. These technologies do not do the thinking for us, but they do help to remove barriers that might otherwise slow us down.

Finding what works for you

Like any assistive technology, AI is not a one-size-fits-all solution. Some people use it to brainstorm ideas, while others use it to create first drafts, summarise information, improve email writing or help structure reports. The key is to experiment and find approaches that genuinely support your way of working.

The most successful strategies are usually those that combine human strengths with technological support, and for dyslexic adults, that means using AI to handle some of the administrative burden while allowing creativity, problem-solving, innovation and big-picture thinking.

Explore tools that support everyday success

AI is just one of many technologies helping dyslexic adults thrive in education, employment and everyday life.
