Frequently asked questions
What is the Dcode Dyslexia reading programme?
Dcode Dyslexia is a structured literacy reading programme based on the Orton-Gillingham approach and overlaid with colour-coded phonics. It teaches decoding, spelling and reading fluency explicitly, in a fixed scope and sequence, using 33 sound cards as the daily instructional core. The programme is designed for struggling and dyslexic readers in classrooms, intervention groups and home settings.
Is Dcode based on Orton-Gillingham?
Yes. Dcode is built on the Orton-Gillingham structured literacy approach, the long-established multisensory method recommended by the International Dyslexia Association for teaching reading to dyslexic learners. Dcode adds a colour-coded phonics system on top of that foundation, so each sound has a consistent visual anchor that pupils can map to letters and letter combinations.
Which year groups can use Dcode in school?
Dcode is sequenced by skill rather than by age, so SENCOs use it across Key Stage 1, Key Stage 2 and into Key Stage 3 for older pupils still working on decoding. Book 1 (CVC short vowels) is the natural starting point for any pupil who has not secured the alphabetic code, regardless of year group. Pupils progress through the eight books at their own pace.
How does Dcode support pupils with EHCPs?
Dcode provides the kind of structured, sequential, multisensory provision often specified in Education, Health and Care Plans for pupils with dyslexia. Each book covers a defined skill set, so SENCOs can record the exact provision delivered, the duration and the pupil's progression book by book. That makes annual reviews and SEND Support Plan reporting more straightforward.
What is the difference between Dcode and Ncode?
Dcode is the reading strand of the programme and Ncode is the spelling strand. The two are designed to run in parallel: as pupils decode a new sound or pattern in Dcode, the matching encoding work is taught and practised in Ncode. This dual approach reflects the science of reading, which shows that decoding and encoding are mutually reinforcing skills.
How do schools order Dcode in bulk?
Schools, academies and trusts can order Dcode against a purchase order on 30-day credit terms. The School Starter Bundle ships three sets of Books 1 to 4 so a SENCO can run three intervention groups in parallel. For larger orders, contact our schools team on 01394 671 818 or sales@thedyslexiashop.co.uk for a tailored quote.
Does Dcode replace our class phonics scheme?
No. Dcode is intended as a targeted intervention for pupils who have not made progress with the school's main phonics provision, not as a Reception or Year 1 core scheme. Schools typically run Dcode alongside their existing systematic synthetic phonics curriculum, using it for SEND intervention, catch-up and pupils whose dyslexia profile needs the multisensory Orton-Gillingham approach.
