Frequently asked questions
What is a tinted notebook or refill pad?
A tinted notebook or refill pad is a writing pad printed on pastel-coloured paper, typically cream, yellow, aqua, green or pink, instead of bright white. The soft background reduces contrast between ink and page, which many people with dyslexia or Irlen's syndrome find easier to read and write on. Lines, margins and binding are otherwise identical to standard A4 and A5 pads.
How do coloured notebooks help with dyslexia and visual stress?
Coloured paper reduces the glare and high-contrast effect that can make text on white paper appear to blur, shimmer or move for people with visual stress or Irlen's syndrome. For dyslexic readers and writers, a softer background can cut eye strain, reduce headaches and make lines on the page easier to follow, particularly during long writing tasks, revision or exam preparation.
Which colour of tinted paper is best for dyslexia?
There is no single best colour; the right tint is individual and varies between users. Cream, pale yellow, aqua, green and pink are the most commonly preferred for dyslexia and visual stress, and a coloured overlay assessment is the clearest way to identify someone's optimal tint. Our multi-colour packs let SENCOs, teachers or employers trial several tints before committing to bulk.
Are tinted notebooks and refill pads allowed in UK exams?
Yes, where the candidate has an identified need. JCQ access-arrangements guidance permits coloured paper, coloured overlays and modified or adapted question papers for candidates with visual stress or dyslexia in GCSE, A level and related public examinations, provided the arrangement reflects the candidate's normal way of working. SENCOs or exam access coordinators should set this up in advance through the usual AARA process.
Can employers provide tinted paper as a reasonable adjustment?
Yes. Under the Equality Act 2010, employers must make reasonable adjustments for employees with dyslexia, visual stress or other disabilities. Providing tinted paper, refill pads or notebooks in an employee's preferred colour is a low-cost, easily implemented adjustment. Funding and advice are often available through the government's Access to Work scheme, which can help cover SEND-related workplace resources.
What is the difference between tinted paper and a coloured overlay?
A coloured overlay is a transparent tinted sheet placed over printed text to soften contrast when reading. Tinted paper is coloured throughout, so it supports the user while writing, revising or taking notes, not only while reading. Many dyslexic learners and workers use both: overlays for printed books and textbooks, and tinted notebooks or refill pads for their own written work.
Do you offer school and workplace bulk discounts on tinted notebooks?
Yes. We offer bulk and multi-pack pricing across our tinted notebook and refill pad range, with 30-day credit terms available for UK schools, academy trusts and workplaces ordering on purchase order. Packs of six, mixed-colour multi-packs and whole-class bundles bring the per-pad cost down significantly. Contact our SEND team on 01394 671 818 or sales@thedyslexiashop.co.uk for a tailored quote.
