The ARK Chewel™ Chewable Pendant Necklace is a gemstone-shaped chew necklace designed to look like jewellery whilst offering a safe outlet for chewing. It is aimed at older teenagers and adults, including autistic people, people with ADHD, and those with sensory processing differences or a wider special educational need, who want a more discreet, grown-up alternative to traditional fidget or chew jewellery. It comes on a 30 inch adjustable breakaway cord and is available in six colours across three firmness levels.

How it helps

The bevelled pendant measures approximately 6.1cm tall, 2.8cm wide, and between 0.76cm and 1.1cm thick, giving it a faceted, gem-like appearance rather than the more obviously toy-like look of some chew jewellery. This makes it easier to wear openly at secondary school, college or in the workplace without it standing out as a sensory aid. As with ARK's other chew necklaces, the cord is a breakaway design intended to release under pressure, and the clasp and cord themselves are not designed for chewing.

For schools

  • Discreet for older pupils: the gemstone-style design suits secondary school, KS4 and post-16 pupils who may feel self-conscious about more obviously toy-like sensory jewellery.
  • Fits within SEN provision: a low-cost tool that can form part of a pupil's sensory diet, EHCP or one-page profile alongside other classroom adjustments.
  • Six colours and three firmness levels: makes it easier for a SENCO or therapy team to match a pendant to an individual pupil's chewing needs and preferences.
  • Straightforward hygiene: the dishwasher-safe design supports schools managing multiple sensory resources across a year group.

For parents and home use

  • Suits older children and teenagers: the jewellery-like look means it can be worn without drawing attention, which many teenagers prefer over more obviously sensory-branded chew tools.
  • Choice of firmness: from softest for light chewing through to toughest for avid chewers, so you can find the right level for your child or teenager.
  • Wearable and practical: the adjustable breakaway cord means it can be worn at home, at school or on outings.
  • Supervision still recommended: the manufacturer states this product is suitable from 3 years and above, but direct adult supervision and regular inspection for wear remain essential regardless of age.

For the workplace

  • Discreet adult sensory support: the gemstone design means autistic adults, and adults with ADHD or sensory processing differences, can wear it as ordinary-looking jewellery whilst getting the oral sensory input they need.
  • Supports reasonable adjustments: employers arranging adjustments under the Equality Act 2010, or via Access to Work, may consider this a discreet, low-cost sensory tool for an employee's individual needs.
  • Easy to maintain: the dishwasher-safe design makes it practical for an adult to keep clean as part of a daily routine.

For autistic adults and young people, having a chew tool that looks like ordinary jewellery can reduce the self-consciousness that sometimes comes with more obviously sensory-branded products. For people with ADHD, the discreet chewing outlet can help channel restless energy without drawing attention in a classroom, college or workplace setting. For people with sensory processing differences, the choice of six colours across three firmness levels allows the level of oral input to be matched to what feels right for the individual.

Occupational therapists commonly recommend chew jewellery as part of a sensory diet to provide safe oral input for people who chew non-food items, helping to regulate arousal levels, focus or anxiety. A more discreet, jewellery-style design such as this is often preferred by older pupils and adults who want the same sensory benefit without it looking like a children's toy.

Whether you are a SENCO supporting older pupils, a parent of a teenager, or an employer supporting an adult employee with sensory needs, the ARK Chewel Chewable Pendant Necklace offers a discreet, practical option. Order today from The Dyslexia Shop.
