What is the MegaMag Polydron Set?

The MegaMag Polydron Set (code 90-1000) is a 36-piece magnetic construction kit from Polydron for children aged 3 years and over. It contains 20 squares measuring 12 x 12 cm and 16 equilateral triangles. Children use the large magnetic pieces to build 2D and 3D shapes and learn about their properties.

How does MegaMag Polydron help children learn about shape?

MegaMag pieces have magnetic polarity, so they are self-correcting. The coloured sides join together, but they will not join to the white sides, which guides children to build shapes the right way. With 20 squares and 16 triangles, children can make cubes, pyramids, prisms and flat nets. The pieces are made from hard-wearing, high-quality ABS that is 70% recycled plastic. A Starter Set model guide is available to download from Polydron.

For schools

  • Supports the maths curriculum on 2D and 3D shape, faces, edges and nets in EYFS and KS1, with use in KS2.
  • Polydron designed the set for small groups or individual pupils in primary schools.
  • Large 12 x 12 cm pieces are easy for a group to see during shared teaching and Quality First Teaching.
  • Hard-wearing ABS pieces suit regular classroom and SEND intervention use.

For parents and home use

  • Magnetic pieces click together quickly, so young children see results straight away.
  • Self-correcting magnets reduce frustration and build confidence.
  • Handling and joining large pieces gives fine motor practice.
  • Open-ended play from age 3 that grows with your child's understanding of shape.

Supporting learners with SEND and learning differences

Hands-on, magnetic construction gives many learners with SEND and learning differences a concrete way into shape and space. Large pieces are easy to see and hold, and the self-correcting magnets give instant feedback without an adult needing to step in. Children can fold a flat net into a 3D shape, open it out again and count the faces, which makes abstract maths ideas visible and repeatable.

The MegaMag Polydron Set is available to order from The Dyslexia Shop, a UK specialist in resources for SEND and learning differences, for use in the classroom or at home.
