ARK's Bite Saber® Chewable Pencil Topper

ARK's Bite Saber® Chewable Pencil Topper is a medical-grade, cylindrical sensory chewing tool that fits over a standard HB pencil. Designed and manufactured in the USA by ARK Therapeutic, the Bite Saber® is shaped specifically to reach the back molars, providing deeper proprioceptive input than many flat or rectangular pencil toppers. It offers a safe, practical, and discreet solution for children and adults who need to chew during writing, note-taking, or any desk-based activity. It is made from FDA-compliant elastomer containing no lead, phthalates, PVC, BPA, or latex.

How It Helps

Chewing is a recognised self-regulation strategy used in sensory integration therapy and occupational therapy. The proprioceptive feedback generated through the jaw and oral muscles can calm the nervous system, reduce anxiety, and improve sustained attention during cognitively demanding tasks. For pupils with autism, ADHD, sensory processing differences, dyspraxia, or anxiety, having an appropriate chewing outlet during lessons can make a measurable difference to engagement and output.

The Bite Saber® is solid at the chewing end and hollow at the other, fitting securely over any standard HB pencil. Its cylindrical shape and textured surface provide all-round tactile input, and the tube design is particularly well suited to back molar chewing, which tends to deliver stronger and more satisfying oral sensory input for pupils with higher chewing needs. Like all ARK Therapeutic chew tools, the Bite Saber® is colour-coded by firmness: Standard for mild chewers, XT (Extra Tough) for moderate chewers, and XXT (Extra Extra Tough) for those with avid or persistent chewing habits. The topper also adds gentle weight to the pencil, which may increase proprioceptive awareness through the hand and support pencil grip and positioning.

Why It Works in Schools and Classrooms

  • Cylindrical shape reaches back molars: The Bite Saber® is designed for deeper oral sensory input than flat or brick-shaped toppers, making it particularly suitable for pupils with higher sensory needs who find standard chew tools insufficiently satisfying.
  • Discreet and age-appropriate: The tube design looks like a standard pen cap from a distance, meaning pupils can use it in class without drawing attention or feeling self-conscious, which supports inclusion and reduces stigma.
  • Three firmness levels support individualised SEN provision: SENCOs, occupational therapists, and class teachers can prescribe the appropriate resistance level for each pupil, or trial all three levels to inform a sensory diet or EHCP sensory objective.
  • Dishwasher safe: Top-rack dishwasher safe, making it straightforward to maintain hygiene standards in a school setting where equipment may be shared or handled frequently.
  • Suitable across all key stages: Recommended for children aged 6 and above, the Bite Saber® is appropriate across KS1, KS2, KS3, KS4, and into secondary and adult settings.

For Home Use

The Bite Saber® is equally well suited for home use during homework, reading, or any activity where a child or adult benefits from having something to chew. Each topper comes with an eraser-less pencil, so it is ready to use straight from the pack.

The Research Behind Oral Sensory Input

Oral motor input, including chewing, is a core component of sensory integration therapy and is widely used as a self-regulation strategy for children and adults with sensory processing differences, autism spectrum conditions, ADHD, and anxiety. The proprioceptive feedback from the jaw muscles has a recognised calming and organising effect on the central nervous system. Occupational therapists frequently recommend chewable tools as part of a broader sensory diet, particularly to support attention and self-regulation during structured learning activities. The cylindrical design of the Bite Saber® is specifically intended for those who find that back molar chewing provides the most effective sensory input.

If you are unsure which firmness level is the best starting point, our team is always happy to offer guidance. As a general rule, it is advisable to start with the Standard level and move up only if the tool is not providing sufficient resistance.
