Place Value Frames and Coins

Help pupils visualise adding and subtracting using columns and place value with this Place Value Frames and Coins.

Before moving on to formal written methods of adding and subtracting larger numbers, ensure they understand the function by using our multisensory magnetic resource.

Take a problem and represent it using the foam magnetic place value coins in the 1000s, 100s, 10s and 1s frames.

Count the coins in each column and write the answer below.

To subtract: Fill up the frames to represent the larger number and subtract the smaller number by removing coins.

Substitute or borrow full frames for coins if you need to add or subtract across a place value boundary.
