What is Key Stage 2?
Key Stage 2 (KS2) covers Years 3 to 6 of primary school in England and Wales, for children roughly aged 7 to 11. It's the stage where children move from the basics of reading and number established at KS1 towards greater independence - tackling longer texts, more complex maths, and a wider range of subjects, before sitting their KS2 SATs at the end of Year 6.
The Key Stage 2 curriculum
The KS2 national curriculum builds on KS1 foundations across English, maths and science, alongside history, geography, art, computing and more. In maths, children progress through fractions, long division, algebra basics and problem-solving; in English, the focus shifts to grammar, spelling, wider reading and more sophisticated writing. For children with dyslexia or reading difficulties, KS2 is often where gaps become harder to hide - texts get longer, spelling rules more complex, and independent reading more central to every subject, making the right support and resources especially important.
