What is Key Stage 3?
Key Stage 3 (KS3) covers the first three years of secondary school in England and Wales (Years 7 to 9) for pupils roughly aged 11 to 14. It's the stage where learning becomes more subject-specialist, with dedicated teachers for maths, English, science and a wider range of subjects than at primary school, and where pupils build the foundations they'll need before choosing their GCSE options.
The Key Stage 3 curriculum
The KS3 national curriculum covers core subjects - English, maths and science (split into biology, chemistry and physics), alongside a broader range of foundation subjects including history, geography, languages, computing, art, music, PSHE and religious education. Maths moves into more abstract topics such as algebra, while English develops more complex reading, writing and analysis skills. For pupils with dyslexia or reading difficulties, KS3 can be a challenging transition: increased subject-specific vocabulary, longer written tasks and less individual support than at primary school level.
